Fr. Leopoldo
by Pietro Valdiporro

Another Italian Saint? They're exploring his cause... "when better days dawn (as they certainly will), the magnificent figure of Fr. Leopoldo will be the sure guide to peace of hearts and souls in God, since he knew, as few other men in our time, how to infuse the peace of God in the confessional into hearts saddened and broken with suffering." -Cardinal Luigi Stepinac (1898-1960) There was always a large crowd waiting outside his confessional, but there absolute silence reigned. The only sound was the door opening to let one penitent out and closing behind the next. No noise, no fuss, no expression of enthusiasm. He had chosen the sure road to holiness, the hidden way of humility. P.99 He passed unobserved in the Community. He was taken for a good, even exemplary, religious, but nothing more. Only those experienced in ways of the sanctity recognized him. This was as he wanted it, and to a friend commenting on it he said, "My son, in order to do good one has to be slyÜin a holy sort of way." P.99 Signor Luigi Artuso, an infirmarian at Padua, going one evening to give Fr. Leopoldo his regular massage, came upon him at the foot of the infirmary stairs, too weak to go any further. He helped him back to his cell, saying, "But why must you go down to the church, Father, when you can hardly stand?" "Let me do some good," he replied, smiling. The same infirmarian frequently came upon him kneeling on the bare floor of the infirmary cell he occupied. Asked why he was kneeling there instead of getting much-needed rest in bed, he always answered, "I'm doing some good. Up to now I haven't done any." P.95 One lesson in particular Fr. Raimondo learned from him: that a priest ought to devote his whole life to the salvation of souls, even if it meant dying of exhaustion in harness. Which was in fact what happened. Almost as though he foresaw that he would not live long, he threw himself into his work without a moment's respite. He often quoted a saying he had from Fr. Leopoldo, "Better live a year or two less and work harder and save one or two more souls." P.66 In 1942, at the age of seven, Gabriella Tiso hurt her foot while playing. It apparently got better, but in 1944 began to hurt her again and she started to limp. Various doctors tried different treatments but the pain grew worse till the child cried day and night. She could scarcely put her foot to the ground and the whole leg was wasting away. At Corpus Christi her mother managed with great trouble to get her to the nearby Capuchin church where she took her to the sacristy to ask for a blessing. One of the priests urged her to have recourse to Fr. Leopoldo, blessed the child in his name, and gave the child a relic from his habit which the child kissed and hung round her neck. Coming out of the sacristy, the mother noticed that Gabriella was no longer limping and asked her how she was. She replied that she felt no more pain. That evening she insisted on taking part in the celebrations and from that day to this has had no further trouble. P. 288 For about a year Sister M. Teodora Frassetto had been suffering pain in her left eye. At first it was only occasional and not severe, but later it became continuous and very severe, causing sympathetic pain in the right eye and her whole head. She suffered this for some time without seeing a doctor for fear of hearing an unpleasant diagnosis. Finally in July, 1945, she was examined by an oculist who diagnosed it as a glaucoma requiring immediate operation if the other eye was not to be jeopardized. But the Sister did not feel able to undergo such a delicate and difficult operation and waited, hoping for God's favour. A few days later, however, the pain was so great that she decided to fix a date for the operation. She took with her a relic Fr. Leopoldo and on the way prayed fervently to him. The doctor examined her and said in amazement, "My dear Sister, you no longer need an operation. You're cured, and you may thank God for it." P. 288 In January, 1945 Signora Albina Trevisan, was attacked by osteomyelitis in the right jaw. She was treated in the hospital at Castelfranco and had seven operations but to no effect. A terrible wound had formed and the pain allowed her no rest. Having read a life of Fr. Leopoldo, she turned to him, reciting the novena prayers continually. On Christmas Eve she was discharged from hospital as incurable. That evening she placed a small relic of Fr. Leopoldo on the sore. She slept peacefully all night and awoke cured. The swelling was gone and the wound closedÞ P.289 Eighteen months old Gabriella Casarin had an attack of bronchial asthma. The specialists of Padua tried every treatment but without effect. The poor child was in a pitiful state. Her mother had recourse to Fr. Leopoldo and on 2nd May, 1945, came to the confessional-cell, prayed at length and touched his picture with a rosary. Then she went home quite certain that he would cure her child. As soon as she arrived, she hung the rosary round the child's neck and she was instantaneously cured and showed no further signs of illness. P. 289 In 1946 a poor family in Padua had managed to scrape together enough money to buy a sack of corn to supplement the inadequate bread ration. The father went at night into a nearby village to collect it and started to wheel it home on his bicycle without noticing that there was a hole in the sack. By the time he had noticed it, there were only a few pounds left. He came home in tears and the family spent the night in prayer to Fr. Leopoldo, for they had no material means of replacing the loss. Next morning the mother went to see how much was left. She found a very empty looking sack in a corner and weighed the contents. Ten pounds. She put this in another sack and had another look in the empty one and saw there was still some. She weighed that. Another ten pounds. So it went on, the apparently empty sack always producing more and the other sack getting fuller and fuller until the entire hundredweight was complete, plus an extra eight pounds! P.291 Alberto Bedin as the result of a spinal lesion and rupture of the abdominal wall had been in bed, paralysed, for over nine years. Fr. Leopoldo had once saved his life by administering Extreme Unction and just before his own death, knowing Bedin to be still ill, sent him a note urging him to have faith for he would walk again. Believing firmly what Fr. Leopoldo had written, Bedin bore his illness courageously, praying constantly to him and awaiting the promised cure. On 7th November, 1944, Bedin who was surrounded by patients and nurses, felt Fr. Leopoldo presence, though he saw nothing. A voice told him to get up and walk. He bounced out of bed. The bystanders rushed to support himÜhe weighed nearly 250lb.Übut he cried, "Out of my way! I'm cured," and began to run all round the ward and all over the hospital. Two years later he was still in perfect health, a living proof of Fr. Leopoldo's power. P. 291 Signora Carmela Bellettieri of Positano was admitted to Salerno hospital in September, 1955, with a diabetic sore on one foot. Treatment proved ineffectual and after five months the sore had become gangrenous and so deep that the bone was exposed. It was accompanied by great pain, allowing the sufferer no rest. An acquaintance gave her a relic of Fr. Leopoldo to place on the affected part and urged her to pray. This she did and after three days the pain suddenly ceased and the sore began to heal. In a short time it was completely healed and not even a scar remains to show the place where it was. P. 299

A widespread moral meltdown whose catastrophic consequences are just beginning to be felt. Yes, there is hope. But the hour is even later than when P.J. Gannon, SJ, spelled out our stark choices some 65 years ago:"Humanity has really two courses open to it -- to get back to clear thinking and right moral principles, or to continue its perilous drift towards the abyss."
